Abstract


The study is addressed to identify the structure and sustenance strategy in palm oil grower households; and to analyze social communication among them in order to establish their sustenance strategy. It was carried out in Kabupaten Barito Kuala. The 60 respondents were selected through simple random sampling, consist of 30 respondents of independent palm oil grower and the rest were the plasma. Other informants were selected by using snowball sampling. The study finds that the sustenance structure in the area are consist of 3 layers, namely: upper income (income > IDR 32,759,500 per annum), middle income (IDR 16,176,000 – 23,214,600 per annum), and lower income (< IDR 16,176,000 per annum). Their sustenance strategies are as follow: (1) on-farm strategy where farmer rely on palm oil, (2) doubled strategy where the farmers rely on non-farm activity (i.e.: construction worker, factory worker, trader, teacher, and motorbike transporter), (3) strategy of acquiring debt from neighbor, cooperative, middle man, company and bank; and (4) asset use strategy (saving, jewelry, land ownership, and vehicle to be sold or pawned). The social communication of farmer household in order to build sustenance strategy are occurred among independent farmer, among plasma farmer, between independent farmer and middle man, cooperative, company, and government. Meanwhile, the plasma farmer communicate to company, cooperative, and government.
