Abstract

Increased frequency of degenerative diseases by free radicals has been caused the increased need for antioxidants-based drugs. The aims of this study were the screening of phytochemicals presents in some medicinal plants extract from Paser District, East Kalimantan and their antioxidant activities. Sample material consisted of stem bark of mangkulitai bini (Guioa pterorhachis), medang kayu (Litsea sp), ulin popar (Salacia sp), melipas (Prunus sp) and stem of kayu kuning (Nauclea officinalis). All of them were collected from forest near the Petangis village, Paser, East Kalimantan. Phytochemical screening was conducted using Harborne methods and antioxidant activity was tested with DPPH IC50. Phytochemical screening of the extracts showed the presence of steroids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, triterpenoids and hydroquinone. Antioxidant activities were ranging from 7.8 to 72 ppm which was considered very active. The stem bark extract from mangkulitai bini and medang kayu showed the highest antioxidant activity (7.8 ppm).
