Pengolahan air gambut menggunakan sistem kontinyu dan batch (Studi di Desa Sawahan, Barito Kuala)
Abstract
Peat water is a surface water of peat soil with a brownish-red feature, containing organic substances, iron, has a high acidity and low hardness. The peat water in Desa Sawahan, Barito Kuala is still used by local people to wash clothes and household utensils, including cutlery, and bathing. Some people even consume peat water after being processed simply. The quality of peat water in this village is classified extreme, especially iron (5.4 mg/L) and pH (2.71), so it is dangerous to consume. Puskesmas Bantuil reported that the case of diarrhea is still high and in the last two years has increased from 195 cases to 265 cases. This study aimed to treat peat water into clean water by improving the parameters of pH, color, and iron. This research was an experimental research which tested the designed equipment to treat peat water with continuous and batch system. The results showed that the peat water treatment using continuous system with water discharge = 0.5 L/sec, dose of lime = 35 mg/L, alum = 10 mg/L, and total of contact time = 21 min 10 sec, was able to improve the pH of water from 3,16 to 7.59; color from 59 PtCo to 27,7 PtCo; and iron from 3.35 mg/L to 1.82 mg/L.Peat water treatment using a batch system with dose of lime = 50 mg/L, and total of contact time = 32 minutes, was able to improve the pH of water from 2.71 to 7.00 and iron from 5.4 mg/L to 0.1 mg/L. So, the batch system proved better for treating peat water in Desa Sawahan. Before it was used, peat water was collected in a container and then added by lime with a dose of 50 mg/L and left at least 30 minutes. As an illustration, in a drum with 200 liters volume, required 10 grams of lime (one tablespoon).Further research is needed to ensure that peat water from this batch sistem treatment can be consumed. Other chemical parameters considered are Mn, sulfate, BOD, and dissolved metals.
