Abstract

Sargassum is a potential algae as a metal bioindicator. In the process of growth, algae require some types of metals as natural nutrients, while the availability of metals in the environment varies greatly. An environment that has a heavy metals content exceeding the required amount can cause algae growth to become obstructed. This study aims to determine the mineral content of Sargassum crassifolium seaweed from Hutumuri Ambon Village and fucoidan as derivative products. The study was conducted by observing the raw material of brown seaweed then extracted to obtain fucoidan and tested proximate for raw materials, UV-Vis and metal testing using AAS. The yield of fucoidan extraction from Sargassum crassifolium was obtained at 5.3% with sulfate levels 5.8%. The quality of water in the growing area of Sargassum (Ambon City Hutumuri Village) is still maintained from metal waste so it is very good for the supply of raw materials. The content of fucoidan minerals does not contain toxic metals.
