Abstract

The availability of fossil fuels as a major supplier of national energy sources is increasingly expensive and limited. Biogas appears as an alternative energy source. Biogas is a cheap, abundant and environmentally friendly fuel, because biogas is processed from organic waste such as garbage, food scraps, livestock manure and food industry waste. The purity of CH4 produced by biogas will be very important, because the CH4 will greatly affect the caloric value produced. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in adsorbent bed height and retention time on biogas purification using water hyacinth pellet adsorbent on CH4 content in biogas. In this study, we observed an increase in the concentration of CH4 in biogas through purification with water hyacinth pellets as an adsorbent. The independent variable is the bed height of the adsorbent 5 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm. Retention time is 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes. The controlled variables include activation of adsorbents with heating temperatures of 1200C. The dependent variable observed was the percentage of biogas content (CH4) before and after purification. Sampling was done on the 20th day. Based on the gas chromatography test results showed that the largest CH4 gas content was in the EGWT60TA5 purification reactor, which was a variation of 5 cm adsorbent and 90 minutes residence time of 32,393 with an increase in CH4 content was 260.3% of the initial gas content CH4 before the refining process is 8.99. And the lowest CH4 gas content is in the EGWT90TA15 sample which is 10.004 with a percentage increase of 11.27% from the initial CH4 content before purification is carried out. Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that the giving treatment of variations in contact time and adsorbent bed height had an effect on biogas purification by using water hyacinth pellet adsorbent so that it can adsorb impurities in biogas and increase methane levels in biogas.
